CRITICAL MASS

Egre Menged Impact’s third project is partnering with local bicycle groups and clubs to create a ‘Critical Mass’ (CM) version in Ethiopia.
Critical Mass is a direct action in which people meet at a set location and time and travel as a group through their neighborhoods on bikes. The idea is for people to group to make it safe for each other to ride bicycles through their streets, based on the adage: there's safety in numbers. It is a call to action for councils, governments, and road planners to design appropriately and thoughtfully for all road users' safety, including those who prefer walking and cycling instead of prioritizing motor traffic.
The event originated in 1992 in San Francisco (typically held on the last Friday of every month); by the end of 2003, the event was being held in over 300 cities worldwide. Critical Mass is now held monthly in more than 1,000 cities worldwide.

Since its establishment in December 2022, CM Addis Ababa has had more than 500 cyclists and skaters joining, including kids, families, and the elderly.

The bicycle group Anbesa Bike Ride has been a valuable partner in organizing and executing the monthly happening event.
